HAITI 2010 / WE HAVE TO DO IT

Our trip to Haiti will take place from April 8th-19th

Solar for Hope / Haiti 2010 is a private citizen initiative utilizing technological and cultural support to process and cook food in the Haitian community through the use of solar energy. We will be providing training in the proper use of solar cooking and heating systems as an aid to reduce the consumption of charcoal and firewood while promoting the use of devices that are powered solely by the sun. These devices include low intensity lights that charge through solar panels. We will also be testing various water filter and purification systems

THE PARTICIPATING TEAM:

José Andrés / Prestigious international Chef, entrepreneur and restaurateur. A social activist, promoter and presenter of cultural gastronomy. Trained and educated in the use of solar cooking.

Carlos Fresneda / Journalist and writers. Environmental activist and ‘El Mundo’ correspondent in New York. Coordinator of resources and needs on the ground.

Manolo Vilchez / Environmental community and solar micro entrepreneur. Expert in technical work of kitchen assembly, Installing generators, solar system formation and dissemination of solar technology and culture. Specialty in coordination, trip materials and delivery logistics.

PREPARATIONS, PARTNERS AND LINKS:
Larriba Raul and Susana López, members of Engineers Without Borders in The Basque Country (Spain) are coordinators of a draft health and technology cooperation in Areguy, Haiti. They play a guiding role in the preparations, reporting on potential of solar cooking and recording sociological data flow.

Telmo de la Quadra Salcedo, coordinator of the NGO, Madrid Rumbo al Sur, and promoter of development cooperation. Assisting in Logistics coordination efforts in shipment of materials, the advisement of travel conditions and local contacts.


COMPONENT TECHNOLOGY
Distribution of 10 parabolic solar cookers AlSol 1.4, containers, accessories and equipment for cooking with retained heat, workshop training for use and processing of indigenous foods. Complemented by delivery of autonomous domestic flashlights and lanterns, several photovoltaic solar generators, socio-environmental analysis of the energy situation in the country.

SOCIO-CULTURAL COMPONENTS
Moving an autonomous technological solution used for food processing in areas of energy poverty, which is both a tool of education and high environmental value. Direct aid to the famine and reduced fuel consumption standard for food processing and services

FINANCING
In consideration of each of the participants there is personal travel, logistics, mobility, food and accommodations. MOBILITY EQUIPMENT
The round trip voyage from Santo Domingo, to the Haitian border and territory will be made in an SUV Mazda BT50 2.5TD which has an outer canopy case for the protection of transport materials and stressful daily travel conditions .
